Welcome to Issue 4 of Wanderer’s Tales, the newsletter of Ancient Roads, the web site of Seattle writer and composer Chris Struble.

Here you will find fantasy fiction set in ancient worlds where music makes magic, and the road ahead is always uncertain. Wanderers welcome.

In this newsletter is Chapter Four of Shield of the Goddess, the adult fantasy novel I am releasing here as a web serial in 2025.

Book: Shield of the Goddess: Chapter Four - Jenan
THE SAME MORNING THAT SHALA SAILED south toward Feros to find her destiny, a boy walked west…

The first three chapters were from the viewpoint of Shala, a girl who dreams of finding respite from the intrusion of other people’s thoughts.

Chapter Four introduces a new viewpoint character, Jenan, a boy who dreams of riding horses.

I have added new music, my own arrangement of an ancient Greek song, Seikilos Epitaph, the oldest complete music composition in the world. The sheet music is public so you are welcome to share it.

If you happened to play the Civilization computer strategy game series, you might recognize the tune, which was the theme of the Greek civilization in several versions of the game.

Music: Seikilos Epitaph
This is my own arrangement of the oldest surviving complete musical composition from the ancient world…

Also new on the website is an Acknowledgements page to thank the many people who encouraged, critiqued, and supported my writing as I worked on Shield of the Goddess.

Book: Shield of the Goddess: Annex: Acknowledgements
I would like to acknowledge the many people who encouraged, critiqued, and supported my writing as I worked on Shield of the Goddess.

Finally I have updated People and Places, with new names and how to pronounce them.

Book: Shield of the Goddess: Annex: People and Places
The people and places of Shield of the Goddess and how I pronounce them.

The theme of this newsletter issue is “community”.

In every age of history, community is essential to accomplish anything lasting in the world.

To ancient people, community started with family, followed by the town or city they lived in, or the tribe they belonged to.

To modern people, a community can be whoever we connect with at various times and places in our lives: work, home, church, volunteer organizations, and many more.
